Dark deception game online12/6/2023 ![]() Mafia and a variant called Thing have been played at science fiction writers' workshops since 1998, and have become an integral part of the annual Clarion and Viable Paradise workshops. Īndrew Plotkin gave the rules a werewolf theme in 1997, arguing that the mafia had less cultural resonance, and that the werewolf concept fit the idea of a hidden enemy who looked normal during the daytime. By the mid 1990s a version of the game became a Latvian television series (with a parliamentary setting, and played by Latvian celebrities). In the 1990s it began to be played in other parts of Europe (in some countries under the name City of Palermo) and then the United States. It became popular in other Soviet colleges and schools, often associated with hugely popular TV series La Piovra, which first ran in 1986. He developed the game to combine psychology research with his duties teaching high school students. Wired attributes the creation to Davidoff and also dates the first game to 1987. ![]() He dates the first game of Mafia to spring 1987 at the Psychology Department of Moscow State University, from where it spread to the classrooms, dorms, and summer camps of Moscow University. The game continues until a faction achieves its win-condition for the village, this usually means eliminating the evil minority, while for the minority, this usually means reaching numerical parity with the village and eliminating any rival evil groups.ĭimitry Davidoff ( Russian: Дми́трий Давы́дов, Dmitry Davydov) is generally acknowledged as the game's creator. The game has two alternating phases: first, a night-phase, during which those with night-killing-powers may covertly kill other players, and second, a day-phase, in which all surviving players debate and vote to eliminate a suspect. At the start of the game, each player is secretly assigned a role affiliated with one of these teams. The game models a conflict between two groups: an informed minority (the mafiosi or the werewolves) and an uninformed majority (the villagers). Mafia, also known as Werewolf, is a Russian social deduction game created by Dimitry Davidoff in 1986. Ravenfield steam workshop12/6/2023 Now that you've backed a dump truck of feedback onto our inboxes, we'll be chewing through that, but if you have any further thoughts let us know. We think this made us miss the mark pretty badly, even though we believe there's a useful feature somewhere here. We understand our own game's communities pretty well, but stepping into an established, years old modding community in Skyrim was probably not the right place to start iterating. We wanted more great mods becoming great products, like Dota, Counter-strike, DayZ, and Killing Floor, and we wanted that to happen organically for any mod maker who wanted to take a shot at it.īut we underestimated the differences between our previously successful revenue sharing models, and the addition of paid mods to Skyrim's workshop. We thought this would result in better mods for everyone, both free & paid. To help you understand why we thought this was a good idea, our main goals were to allow mod makers the opportunity to work on their mods full time if they wanted to, and to encourage developers to provide better support to their mod communities. It's obvious now that this case is different. We've been shipping many features over the years aimed at allowing community creators to receive a share of the rewards, and in the past, they've been received well. We've done this because it's clear we didn't understand exactly what we were doing. We talked to the team at Bethesda and they agree. For anyone who spent money on a mod, we'll be refunding you the complete amount. We're going to remove the payment feature from the Skyrim workshop. The Sketchfab preview can also be inserted into Steam Community Discussions, Announcements, and Greenlight submissions. Once your item has been posted to Sketchfab and you have a page on their site, you may enter that URL in the new field provided in the Steam Workshop when editing the screenshots and videos for your item. To include a Sketchfab preview, you’ll need to create a free account on Sketchfab’s website ( ) and upload your model there similar to how you go about posting a video to YouTube. This can be used to provide an interactive 3D presentation of your model, scene, or item that users can zoom, pan, or rotate around to get a better view of your submission. Here’s an example from johnskyrim’s Doomhammer, a Skyrim weapon mod: When preparing the Workshop page for your mod or item, you now have the option to include a 3D Sketchfab preview of your item along with your videos and screenshots. SCPPA will resell the output to the City of Colton. Under the PPA, SCPPA will purchase 16MW of power generated by the expected 30MW Casa Diablo-IV (CD4) geothermal project located in Mammoth Lakes, California. ![]() (NYSE: ORA) announced the signing of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) between a subsidiary of the Company and Southern California Public Power Authority (SCPPA). As a result of the RFOs, CCCE and SVCE have to date signed 12 joint PPAs, totaling 1,470 MW of clean energy and 356 MW of storage. In a release today, Ormat Technologies Inc. The PPA is a result of the request for offers (RFO) CCCE and SVCE issued jointly in 2019. The CD4 project also marks a significant milestone as the first in Ormat’s portfolio to sell its output to Community Choice Aggregators.Īccording to Paul Thomsen, Vice President of Business Development at Ormat, “We are excited that these contracts will be the first of many such contracts with the rapidly growing Community Choice Aggregators throughout California.” “Central Coast Community Energy is committed to procuring 100% clean and renewable energy on behalf of our Central Coast customers by 2030 through new and diverse renewable projects,” said Tom Habashi, CCCE CEO. “We are ecstatic about the CD4 project in partnership with Silicon Valley Clean Energy and Ormat breaking ground and helping us to deliver consistent and clean energy to support our growing customer base in a fiscally responsible way.” SVCE is specifically interested in the innovative closed-loop technology that makes this resource emission-free.” “This project will increase reliability and demonstrate the variety of technologies needed to transition away from fossil fuels and to a clean, decarbonized grid. SVCE and 3CE will be able to count the CD4 project towards the CPUC’s new procurement order,” said Girish Balachandran, SVCE CEO. “Carbon-free energy from resources such as geothermal that produce energy in all hours of the day are critical to achieve California’s GHG reduction goals. The CD4 project will be the first new geothermal power plant built within the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) balancing authority in the last 30 years. The state recently ordered the procurement of at least 1,000 MW of zero carbon emitting generation resources with at least an 80% capacity factor by 2026 which includes new geothermal. The CD4 project is also using an innovative closed-loop binary process to eliminate the natural carbon emissions associated with flash steam geothermal energy production. The project is estimated to bring over $13 million in economic benefits to the Mammoth Lakes region and will create more than 180 construction jobs. The remaining 16 MW of power will be going to the City of Colton in Southern California. The state-of-the-art project is expected to provide 30 MW of electricity, enough to power 22,000 homes and offset 160,000 tons of CO2 annually. Construction was officially kicked off in May 2021. Central Coast Community Energy (CCCE) and Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE) will receive 14 MW of the project output through a contract signed with Ormat Technologies. Construction is underway for the binary geothermal power project, Casa Diablo-IV (CD4) located in Mammoth Lakes, CA. Flat roof replacement12/5/2023 ![]() Pre-formed tapered insulation is commonly available in ⅛”, ¼” and ½” per foot slopes.Īre the scupper openings large enough to support water flow? Are there enough scupper openings? Are there saddles present between scuppers to eliminate ponding water?Īre the gutters large enough to handle water flow? Are the downspouts large enough to eliminate water quickly? Are there enough downspouts?ĭeficiencies in your roof drainage system can be easily corrected. For example, a roof that sheds water toward the front of a building could be modified to shed water toward the back of the building. Not only can existing roof slope be increased, but it is also possible to change slope direction completely. Most roof slope deficiencies can be easily corrected with the addition of tapered insulation. This will minimize the chance of stagnant water (ponding) on the roof surface and will minimize the chance of water damage when the roof begins to fail. While many older flat roofs have performed satisfactorily with slopes of barely ⅛” per foot, it is typically recommended that the roof slope be a minimum of ¼” per foot. Simply put, a roof should shed water not retain it (like a swimming pool). When this roof begins to develop leaks, the leaks will be much more severe than they would on a roof that is shedding water quicker and has minimal ponding water. ![]() The ponding water is caused by a roof slope that is inadequate to overcome irregularities in the roof surface. Imagine a roof that has very little slope and many areas of ponding water. The biggest problem with most commercial or flat roofing systems is caused by poor roof slope. The slope of your roof system plays an important role in how effectively your roof sheds water. "The Perez Family" is best when Nair shows her hand: the warm, brown tones of the cinematography, for instance, or the casting of the wonderful Indian actor Ranjit Chowdhry as the immigration official who must listen to Tomei's lies about more "discovered" relatives. There's something too comically forced about a person who would sob inconsolably upon hearing of John Wayne's demise. Brimming over with exotic sultriness and Desi Arnaz pronunciations (as in "joo" for "you"), she's a real strain on the movie. Molina, Huston and Palminteri exude enjoyable, empathetic presence with their performances, but Tomei is so cha-cha precious, you want to smack the little Cuban impersonator. After 20 years away from his real family, Molina finds himself with a shellshocked "grandfather" (Lazaro Perez) and a teenage "son" (Jose Felipe Padron). In a bid to raise her number even higher in the sponsorship lottery, Tomei searches for more Perezes to adopt. ![]() ![]() So she persuades Molina (who shares her last name of Perez) to pose as her husband. Stuck with the other refugees in the Orange Bowl football stadium, Tomei learns she can draw an American sponsor faster if she's part of a big family. (The alarm is triggered at one point by Molina, who runs off in terror before Huston gets to the door.) This makes her more susceptible to the attentions of police officer Palminteri - constantly responding to Huston's overly sensitive burglar alarm. When Cuban strongman Fidel Castro empties his prisons in the Mariel boat lift of 1980, thousands are allowed to flee to the United States.Īmong the one-way travelers are Molina, a sugar cane field proprietor whose wife (Huston) and daughter (Trini Alvarado) have lived without him in Miami for 20 years, and Tomei, a lusty, streetwise personality who wants to go to the land of Elvis, rock 'n' roll and John Wayne.ĭue to the kind of frustrating destiny that only happens in romantic comedies, Huston is led to believe that her husband is not among the Marielitos. But she does so at the cost of the movie: "The Perez Family," which also throws Anjelica Huston, Alfred Molina and Chazz Palminteri into the pot, is an accumulation of clashing flavors in an overambitious stew.Īs with "Mississippi Masala" (in which an Indian family settles in the American South, following Idi Amin's expulsion of Asians from Uganda), Nair launches her story with a political incident. Director Mira Nair, who made "Mississippi Masala," feels such goodwill toward her characters, she goes out of her way to indulge them. Marisa Tomei's annoyingly over-the-top performance as a curvaceous, earthy free spirit will attest to that alone. "THE PEREZ Family," a slow-burning romantic comedy in which Cuban immigrants resolve their troubled love lives in Miami, is too overcooked for its own good. Ancient chinese abacus facts12/5/2023 ![]() "Pascal's" Triangle was discovered by mathematician Liu Ju-Hsieh, long before Pascal was born. Science and Technology in Ancient China - Crystalinks Cvs covid test kits home12/5/2023 ![]() Later, though, a leaked government memo said h ealth officials were privately worried about a tsunami of false positives. Along with vaccines, free tests are part of that nation’s plan to quash the virus. The UK government started giving away covid antigen tests for free, by mail and on street corners, on April 9, saying it wants people “to get in the habit” of testing themselves twice a week as social distancing restrictions are eased. A spokesperson for Abbott told me that they might also help people “start thinking about coordinating more covid-conscious bridal showers, baby showers, or birthday parties.” For employers who want to keep an office or factory open, they say, self-directed consumer tests might be a good option. “I think that the move to over-the-counter is great, but it has limited value in a world where vaccines become more widely available.” Vaccination credentials could be more important for travel and dining than test results are.Ĭompanies selling the tests say they are still a relevant strategy for getting back to normal, especially given that kids aren’t getting vaccinated yet. “The real value of these tests was six months ago,” says Amitabh Chandra, a professor at Harvard University’s Kennedy School. ![]() ![]() Home tests will now be manufactured in the tens of millions, say their makers, but some experts aren’t sure how much they will matter at this point. But the number of daily tests in the US has never much exceeded 2 million, according to the Covid Tracking Project, and most of those were done in labs or on special instruments. ![]() Still relevant?Īs the covid-19 pandemic spread around the globe last year, economists and scientists called for massive expansion of testing and contact tracing in the US, to find and isolate infected people. If used at scale to screen for covid, they could send millions of anxious people in search of lab tests and medical care they don’t need. Related StoryĪs a result, I don’t think home tests are as useful as some have hoped. This lower background rate means if home tests were used by everyone in the country tomorrow, there could be five to 15 wrong positives for every right one. Now consider this same phenomenon-a higher chance of false positives than of real ones-applying to a large group, or even a whole country. The way I was using the test, any positive result was nearly certain to be wrong. What this meant is that my chance of a correct positive when I took the test was also essentially zero, while my false positive chance remained 2% like everyone else’s. The second source of trouble I didn’t anticipate is what is known as “pretest probability.” As I said, I don’t socialize, so my probability of actually having covid in first place was very low, maybe even zero. By the time my review of the home tests was complete, I’d tested five times in two days, accumulating 1 in 10 odds of being told I had covid when I didn’t (a 2% chance of a false positive each time, multiplied by five tests). The first way is through repeat testing, the kind I did. What I didn’t realize-and what your everyday CVS shopper won’t either-is that there are two ways that less-than-perfect specificity can get amplified into a bigger problem. For the home tests I tried, that figure is about 98%, with a corresponding 2% rate of false positives. The tricky part of unrestricted testing, I learned, comes instead from the concept of “specificity,” or the rate at which a test correctly identifies negatives. But if the alternative is no test at all, then none of those infections would be caught. That is, they catch about nine of every 10 infections, a metric called the test’s “sensitivity.” Some people have said that any missed cases are a worry, since a person with a false negative could go out and infect someone else. The issue with home tests is accuracy, which is between 85% and 95% for detecting covid. Chaperone proteins in mad cow disease12/5/2023 ![]() To stretch it open to a flat hand, you need to use some energy. This “push” can be provided by chaperones.Īnother example you can use to imagine why proteins fold, is to look at your hand. The protein needs a little energy “push” to get over this peak, to continue folding correctly to finally fold into its native, active structure. The protein still contains a lot of free energy (it’s only halfway to the bottom!), but it cannot continue to fold, because of the little “energy peak” that the red arrow points to. Let’s say the protein starts to fold, but gets “stuck” where the blue arrow points. However, the protein might get stuck at some places. When it begins to fold by itself, it will lose some of this free energy, become more stable, and fall down the canyon. The protein starts at the top of the canyon, when it is an unfolded polypeptide chain and contains a lot of free energy. Note that when the protein is in the lowest point of the canyon is when it is in its native, active form.Ĭonsider the picture above. However, the proteins might still need help sometimes. Because a folded protein contains less free energy than an unfolded protein, protein folding is a spontaneous process. Proteins are correctly folded when they are in a conformation that contains as little free energy as possible. The less free energy (entropy) a molecule has, the more stable it is. Molecules always want to have as little free energy as possible. To understand protein folding, we need to remember thermodynamics. The structure of the protein is largerly dependent on the amino acid sequence, but it is also influenced by its environment. These subunits are products of different genes but act as a single functional unit. The quaternary structure refers to the three-dimensional structure which consists of multiple polypeptide chains, known as subunits. The tertiary structure refers to the three-dimensional from the protein takes when the α-helixes and β-sheets form a globular structure. The secondary structure refers to the α-helixes and β-sheets the polypeptide chain forms. The primary structure of the protein refers to the sequence of amino acids in the polypeptide chain. Proteins have four “levels” of structure. Correct folding, that is, correct manipulation of the polypeptide chain so it created the correct three-dimensional protein, is essential for its function. Proteins are synthesized as one-dimensional polypeptide chains, but end up as three-dimensional.
